Master of Education Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the program for?
- Individuals who hold a current teaching license
- Teachers who have a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience—does not include long-term substitute teaching
- Candidates who maintained a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 for all college work
How is the Master of Education (M.Ed.) program structured?
- The M.Ed. is designed around three cognate areas:
- Generalist
- Literacy
- School Leadership
- Generalist cognate area allows students to design their own cognate area by selecting courses and seminars around a theme or area of interest, or allows candidates who are transferring credit to apply those courses to a cognate area.
- Literacy cognate area equips teachers to assess students’ abilities in reading and writing, and to use instructional strategies that will enhance student learning in the language arts.
- School Leadership cognate area prepares teachers to serve as committee chairs, curriculum team leaders, department chairs, mentors to novice teachers, and to assume other leadership roles.
What are the qualifications for admission?
- Complete a formal application form
- Submit an autobiographical statement of at least 350 words including information on yourself, your recent work in education, and reasons for seeking the Bethel College M.Ed. degree
- Submit a brief resume
- Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended (copies can be submitted initially for review but official copies are required before final admission)
- Submit three new letters of recommendation (at least two directly related to your experience in education)
- Interviews will be scheduled prior to admission
What is the program like?
- Students take classes as they are needed and offered—the M.Ed. program is not conducted as a cohort
- Classes themselves are offered in the evening
- Some summer courses may be offered in the afternoon instead of evening
- Electives are available with approval
- Transfer graduate-level credit may be accepted if approved
What is the cost of the program and is financial assistance available?
- Tuition for graduate courses is $250 per credit hour ($750 for a 3 hour course)
- Books and materials are not included in the tuition
- Parking fee is $50 per semester
- Financial aid is available in the form of loans
