Master of Arts in Teaching FAQ

Who is the program for?

  • Individuals who have successfully completed the Bethel College Transition to Teaching program
  • Transition to Teaching completers who have taught full-time for one year

How is the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program structured?

  • Elementary education candidates have completed 24 hours in their Transition to Teaching program
    • An additional 12 credit hours will need to be completed for the MAT degree
  • Secondary education candidates have completed 18 hours in their Transition to Teaching program
    • An additional 18 credit hours will need to be completed for the MAT degree
  • There are 6 required credit hours of core courses and then options of core electives to complete the final 6 credit hours

What are the basic qualifications for admission?

  • Complete a formal application form
  • Submit an updated resume
  • Submit three new letters of recommendation

What is the program like?

  • Students take classes as they are needed and offered—the MAT program is not conducted as a cohort
  • Classes are offered in the evening
    • Some summer courses may be offered in the afternoon instead of evening
  • Electives are available if approved
  • Transfer graduate-level credit may be accepted if approved
