What is the basic process for becoming a teacher at Bethel College?
Bethel College education majors proceed through a process that includes taking the courses listed under Programs. In addition, each education major’s knowledge, dispositions and skills are assessed through an assessment system.

When and Where will my field experiences be?
Education majors begin field experiences in local schools starting with their first education course. You will go to a variety of schools, both public and private, in the surrounding area. Some of the school districts you might work in include: South Bend Community Schools, Mishawaka Schools, Penn-Harris Madison, Elkhart, Baugo, Concord, Wa-Nee and John Glenn. -
Where can I student teach?
Student teachers are placed in school districts within a 30 mile radius from the Bethel Campus. The student teaching handbook gives more details about the placement process. Student teachers may request the school district where they prefer to student teach.

How long is student teaching?
Student teaching placements are for 15 weeks. A second student teaching placement (at a different school or different grade level) may be available. Opportunities are available for overseas student teaching.

What are Indiana's testing requirements for licensing teachers?
Indiana requires PRAXIS I: the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) for anyone seeking an initial Standard License as a teacher. In addition to the PPST, Praxis Specialty Area Tests (Praxis II) are required for content areas.

What if I want to teach outside of Indiana?
Our graduates who have passed required Praxis tests are prepared for Indiana Licensure. Our licensing advisor is available to assist in the immediate completion of the application process through the Indiana Professional Standards Board.
Licensed graduates may then choose to apply for an additional license in another state. Over 30 departments of education across the country also use the Praxis test and offer reciprocity. Other states may provide a provisional license with minimal requirements and/or additional testing.
