The Crossings

The Crossings Submission Guidelines for 2014 College and High School Contest ($250 award for first place for the College winner and the High School winner)

General Guidelines:

  • Entries not submitted under the following guidelines will be disqualified.
  • All submissions must comply with the theme of Memory.  However, the connection need not be overt.  It can be as subtle as possible while at least being evident to the editors of the magazine.
  • Entries with gratuitous explicit content will be disqualified. Bethel is an evangelical Christian college affiliated with the Missionary Church.
  • Please, submit a brief bio with your submission, no more than 50 words. Please include your address, phone number and email address with submissions. Include which literary category your work falls under: short story, flash fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction. Also, include your age and the contest you’re submitting to: “High School” or “College.” One high school winner and one college winner will be chosen and will receive a $250 cash award and publication in the 2014 issue of The Crossings. Honorable mentions in each category of literature will also receive publication in the spring 2014 issue of The Crossings.
  • A $5 submission fee per submission will assessed for those entering the “College Contest.” The submission fee pays for a one year subscription (one issue) of the journal.   • Submission period opens Oct. 25, 2013 and closes Jan. 17, 2014. Submit your piece with all of the above information above to: No simultaneous submissions accepted.

Short Story:

  • Word limit: 1,000-3,000
  • Submit one short story.

Flash Fiction:

  • A complete short story in fewer than 750 words.
  • Submit no more than 2 flash fiction pieces.


  • Submit up to 5 poems of any form (i.e. blank verse, rhyming couplets, free verse, sonnets, etc.)

Creative Nonfiction: literary journalism, memoir, essay, etc.

  • Word limit: 1,000-3,000
  • Submit one creative nonfiction piece.
