Robby Prenkert (’92) is married to Jeanie (’92), a second grade teacher at LaSalle Elementary in Mishawaka, and Bethel College’s 1990 homecoming queen. They are the proud parents of Sydney (born May 18, 2006) and owners of the best dog in the world—the very lively black Labrador retriever named Morgan. They live in Baugo Township.
Robby holds ministerial credentials with the North Central District of the Missionary Church and is a lifelong attendee and member of churches within the denomination. He holds a B.A. in English from Bethel (’92), an M.A. in Intercultural Studies from Wheaton College Graduate School (’94), and a D.Litt. from Drew University, where he wrote a dissertation called “The Wonder of Mentors Never Met: A Memoir of a Reading Life: Part I” (‘07).
Robby worked at Bethel in Student Development (R.D. Egle Hall, House of Higher Learning, JV basketball coach [’94-‘95], Discipleship and mentoring coordinator, etc.) from 1994-97. In 1997, the Prenkerts moved to Kingston, Jamaica where they served as missionaries with RENEWED Ministries for two years, coordinating an inner-city sports ministry for at risk youth in Olympic Gardens, one of Kingston’s most notorious “born ‘fi dead” ghettoes. Robby also taught various English, Christian Education, and Missions courses at the Jamaica Theological Seminary while in Kingston.
At Bethel, Robby is the Chair of the Committee on the Humanities, which provides oversight for the new (2009) Humanities major and double major. He enjoys reading and discussing the world’s greatest stories with students. He daydreams often about writing the great “Christian” postmodern novel. His academic interests include the connection between literary reading and Christian formation; the involuted, self-reflexive novel; the writing portfolio as confessional form; and Vladimir Nabokov.
Robby writes daily, and his personal journal—which he has kept since 1985—includes well over thirty volumes and an estimated 750,000 words, most of which you wouldn’t be interested in, but some of which occasionally makes its way into one of the four blogs he keeps very irregularly. He tries each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to raise the level of play with the Lunchtime Basketball Association (LBA) to the border of respectability.
