Professor Adam Hammett is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics here at Bethel. He holds his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he also minored in Computer Science, Religious Studies, and Chemistry. While at Westmont College he received the Outstanding 1st or 2nd Year Student award for Math as well as Chemistry. Upon graduation from Westmont, Professor Hammett received the Outstanding Graduate award for Mathematics. He then attended “The” Ohio State University where he received his Doctorate Degree in Mathematics in 2007. Dr. Hammett graduated from Ohio State as a University Presidential Fellow and also received the Graduate Teaching Award while doing his graduate work. All of these awards are great accomplishments for Professor Hammett and Bethel College is happy to have him on their faculty.
Professor Hammett taught the Math for Teachers courses in addition to various other math courses for a year at Ohio State after receiving his Ph.D. He then came to Bethel College in the fall of 2009 where he teaches a variety of math classes. Thus far, Professor Hammett has taught the Math for Teachers courses, Calculus III, Number Theory, History of Math, Discrete Math, Abstract Algebra, and other upper division math courses. He also publishes a variety of math research papers in peer-review journals.
Dr. Hammett not only teaches math here at Bethel College, but he also leads the Problem Solving Group, a group of Bethel Students who publish solutions to problems in various undergraduate mathematics publications. He has also been a part of the mentoring program here at Bethel College for students, and enjoys helping students build a stronger relationship with God. Professor Hammett is also beginning to work with the Student Council and currently serves as faculty advisor to the underclassmen.
Professor Hammett has been happily married since 2001 to his wife Rachael Hammett. Her maiden name was Rachael Leightner and she was a graduate of Bethel in 2000. Dr. Hammett is actively involved with the middle school ministry at his home church, St. Mark Missionary Church. He also participates in an after-school mentoring program there, S.A.L.T (Seeking and Learning Together), where he works with students in grades 1-5, helping them with homework and encouraging them to learn more about God in the process. Professor Hammett also has a life at home where he enjoys solving math puzzles, watching all genres of movies, listening to music, playing sports video games on his Playstation 2, playing golf, and reading Christian philosophical books. He enjoys outdoor activities too, such as hiking and cycling. Professor Hammett is also an avid sports fan, and follows the L.A. Lakers, L.A. Dodgers, Ohio State Football, and the Indianapolis Colts.
Professor Hammett’s favorite Bethel Memory was going to the Spring Graduation of 2009, we he saw his first class of Math and Math Education majors walk across the stage. He is looking forward to building more great memories alongside Bethel faculty and students.
