The Mexican Film Festival

These classic films of Mexican cinema will be screened on the following dates at 7PM in the Miller/Moore Academic Center, room 342. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles.

The history of Mexican cinema is rich with tradition and unique in expression. The Sergei Eisenstein-inspired films of Golden Age director Emilio “El Indio” Fernández, the nostalgic allure of the singing charro cowboys, and the cult classics of El Santo Enmascarado de Plata. For Bethel College’s Second Mexican Film Festival, a film from each of these four genres will be screened. Brief introductory comments will be provided by Dr. Scott DeVries, Chair of the Department of Modern Language Studies and Assistant Professor of Spanish with a short discussion session to follow. All of the films will be screened at Bethel College on Wednesdays at 7 PM in the Academic Center, Room 342. Directions and Parking instructions.

2/10 Enamorada (1946)

Enamorada

Set during the Mexican revolution, the story concerns the rocky relationship between the high-born Beatriz (María Felix) and revolutionary General Reyes (Pedro Armendariz). Forsworn to kill and/or humiliate any artistocrats in his path, Reyes cannot bring himself to harm Beatriz, whose hatred for the general slowly but surely turns to love.

En una película de la Revolución Mexicana, la historia se trata del amor entre la aristócrata Beatriz (María Felix) y el revolucionario general Reyes (Pedro Armendariz). Comprometido de humillar y matar a los aristócratas en su camino, Reyes no se puede dejar dañar a Beatriz. El odio de ella lentamente se convierte en amor.

El rebelde

When his father is murdered, a young rebel (Jorge Negrete) vows revenge against society. Intending to get even with the wealthy rancher responsible for his father's death, Negrete poses as the music teacher to the rancher's pretty daughter Maria Elena Marques. Falling in love with the girl, our hero decides to mend his ways, but is still obliged to kidnap the heroine before her father will consent to their marriage.

Un joven rebelde (Jorge Negrete) rechaza la sociedad después del asesino de su padre. Para vengarse de su muerte, el rebelde se hace el supuesto maestro de música de la hija del asesino, un hacendado rico. Al enamorarse de la joven, el rebelde igual la tiene que secuestrar para que su padre apruebe el matrimonio.

4/21 El Santo en el museo de cera (1963)

El Santo, the masked Mexican wrestler, investigates a series of kidnappings. He discovers that the mysterious Doctor Caroll is using the victims as part of his experiments to develop an army of monsters.  Will El Santo’s wrestling prevail in the end?

El Santo, enmascarado de plata, investiga una serie de secuestros y descubre que el misterioso Dr. Caroll utiliza las víctimas para construir un ejército de monstruos. ¿Les puede ganar El Santo a estos monstruos malvados?
