Bethel College School of Nursing recognized seventy-nine nursing students during the Nursing Dedication Program held on January 19, 2013 in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center. Thirty-eight BSN students and forty-one ADN students were recognized as having completed Nursing Fundamentals and advancing in their respective nursing program. Prior to the start of the program, guests enjoyed a slide show prepared by ADN student JoAnne Jester and musical selections by guitarists Luke Eichorn and Taylor Short, BSN nursing students.
Dr. Rick Roberts, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Grace College, gave the opening prayer following the welcome by Dr. Barbara Bellefeuille, Bethel College Vice President for Academic Services. Pre-nursing student, Erica Schwarz performed “Circle of Friends”.
Mr. Rick Becker, Associate Faculty of Nursing at Bethel College, delivered the address “Channels of Grace: Nursing Students and the Gospel of Care”. He related the story of the bond and respect that developed between French artist, Henri Matisse, and the nursing student, Monique Bourgeoise, who cared for him. He stated that nursing students are “channels of God’s grace” and impact the lives of those for whom they care. Love can be seen in the “channels of grace” and love sets Bethel College nursing students apart.
The history of the Florence Nightingale nursing lamp was given by Dr. Deborah Gillum, Bethel College Dean of Nursing, after which students received a lamp from a member of the faculty. Each student then lit their lamp from one held by Dr. Gillum. Sally Erdel and JoLynn Reimer, Bethel College Faculty, presented each student. The Gideon Auxiliary presented each student with a New Testament. The Benediction was read by Dr. Mark Norris, Dean, School of Arts and Sciences at Grace College.
