Family and friends of the members of the Associate Degree Nursing class of 2015 and the Bachelor of Science Nursing class of 2016 gathered on January 18, 2014 in the Everest-Rohrer/Chapel/Fine Arts Center for the Nursing Dedication Program. The nursing students were recognized as having completed Nursing Fundamentals and advancing in their respective nursing program. Prior to the start of the program, guests enjoyed a slide show prepared by BSN student Morgan Secrist and guitar selections by BSN students Luke Eichorn and Taylor Short.

Following the welcome and presentation of the platform by Dr. Gregg Chenoweth, President of Bethel College, Rev. Mark Dexter, father of BSN student Lauren Dexter, offered the opening prayer. Scriptures were read by ADN class member Kelsey McGarvey.

Dr. Deborah Gillum, Dean of Nursing, introduced Mr. Rick Becker, nursing faculty, who delivered the address “Seatbelts, Everyone!”. In his address, Mr. Becker related how nursing could learn some lessons from Ms. Frizzle of The Magic School Bus. Ms. Frizzle can often be heard to say, “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy”. Linking this to nursing, taking chances requires vulnerability, making mistakes requires learning from the mistakes, and getting messy requires dealing with life challenges of patients.

The history of the Florence Nightingale nursing lamp was explained by Dr. Gillum, after which each student was called forward by Mrs. Sally Erdel and Mrs. JoLynn Reimer to receive a lamp from a member of the faculty. The lamp was then lit by Dr. Gillum. The Gideon Auxiliary presented each student with a New Testament. Closing announcements were offered by Dr. Barbara Bellefeuille, Vice President for Academic Services, and the Benediction was read by Deborah Fields, ADN student.
