The Bethel College School of Nursing pinned eighty-four graduates during a ceremony held on April 30, 2011 in the Everest-Rohrer Auditorium. Steven Cramer, PhD, President of Bethel College and Carol Dorough, EdD, Dean of Nursing led the procession into the auditorium. Sandra Benninghoff, grandmother of Amanda Onax, ADN graduate, read the invocation followed by a musical selection, Franciscan Benediction, sung by a group from the BSN graduating class. A reading “You Are a Nurse” was presented by Michelle Randolph, ADN graduate. Dr. Dorough introduced the speaker, Sally Erdel, RN, MS, nursing faculty and last year’s recipient of the Bethel College Professor of the Year award. In her address, “Be Well, Do Good Work, and Keep in Touch”, Mrs. Erdel explained to the graduates that they needed to care for self as well as their patients, maintain caring and knowledge in their practice, and to stay connected to the school and their classmates. The symbolism of the nursing cap and the nursing pin was described by Dr. Dorough. The members of the nursing class of 2011 were presented by Dr. Deb Gillum, PhD, ANP, FNP, Associate Dean of Nursing, and Mr. Rick Becker, nursing faculty, and received their pins from members of the nursing faculty. Nurses in the audience were invited by Teresa Jodway, nursing faculty, to join the graduates in reading the International Pledge for Nurses. Closing remarks were offered by Dennis Crocker, PhD, Vice President for Academic Services, and the benediction by Mark Norris, B.A., MSc., PhD, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Grace College.
In separate ceremonies held recently, several nursing students were recognized with scholarships and awards. Junior student, Emily Henry, and senior, Sarah Thompson, received Bethel College Presidential Servant Leadership awards. In addition, the following were recognized:
