Bethel College School of Nursing pinned one hundred twelve graduates during a ceremony held on May 3, 2014 in the Everest-Rohrer Auditorium. Musical arrangements by pianist Robert Rhein, DMA, Associate Professor of Music, preceded the processional which was led by Gregg Chenoweth, PhD, President of Bethel College and Deborah Gillum, PhD, Dean of Nursing. Wes Smith, father of BSN graduate Shanel Smith, read the invocation. The song, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was sung by Lucas Miner and Jill Hueni, BSN graduate, and students of Karli Pepin, BSN graduate, performed interpretive dance. Dr. Gillum introduced the speaker, April Hart, MSN, Associate Professor. Mrs. Hart, who is known by her students for always having a systematic approach, presented 5 steps for making God – honoring choices. The steps in her approach are: 1) tune out distraction and tune in to God’s voice, 2) seek God’s counsel, 3) narrow down your choices, 4) do something, 5) give thanks for the results He’ll bring you. Following the address, members of the faculty blessed the hands of each graduating nursing student while violinists Lydia Klassen and Kolee New performed musical selections. The symbolism of the nursing cap and the nursing pin was explained by Dr. Gillum. The members of the nursing class of 2014 were presented by Nursing Professor Sally Erdel, MS and received their pins from members of the nursing faculty and a flower from Dr. Gillum. Nurses in the audience were invited by nursing faculty member Corie VanArsdale, MSN to join the graduates in reading the International Pledge for Nurses. Closing remarks were offered by Barbara Bellefeuille, EdD, Vice President for Academic Services. Rick Burkholder, father of BSN graduate Amy Burkholder, gave the benediction.
