Engineering Drives Our World
The world is full of great engineering feats that range from the massive—the re-building of the World Trade Center with the new Freedom Tower—to the microscopic—DNA fingerprinting. Still others—smart phones, mp3 players, laptop computers and the Internet, flex-fuel cars, jets and interstate highways—are fixtures in our everyday lives. Regardless of their size, these engineering marvels have changed the way we work, live and communicate. And all share a fundamental basis, a foundation in the natural sciences and mathematics.

Bethel College offers a collaborative program that lays the groundwork on which specialized engineering skills are built. Our innovative “3-2” engineering program allows you to earn a bachelor’s degree in mathematics/physics from Bethel and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a collaborating institution (either the University of Notre Dame or Trine University), normally over a five-year period. You complete three years of coursework in the sciences, mathematics and the liberal arts at Bethel, and then transition to a partnering university for two years in a specific engineering discipline. My summer internship with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) gave me the opportunity to put what I have learned in the classroom into practice, says Chad Stephenson, Bethel mathematics and computational physics graduate. In conjunction with the 3/2 program we have an in-house 4 year major called Engineering Science. This major gives students the opportunity to do all of their work at Bethel. Currently, the degree is a general engineering science degree which would enable them to obtain employment in the civil, electrical and mechanical fields. Furthermore, the Engineering Science degree prepares students to pursue graduate study in such areas as mechatronics (the blend of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering, e.g. robotics) and energy and sustainability (an interdisciplinary blend of Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering - solar, wind and water). Liberal Arts and Sciences Form The Foundation
A strong foundation in mathematics, physics and chemistry, combined with an extensive study in the humanities and social sciences, is excellent preparation to enter a rigorous engineering program. A liberal arts education gives you a broad perspective from which to approach problems as well as an understanding of the scientific, social and ethical significance of technology. Our students also credit Bethel’s Christian foundation, individual attention from faculty and small class size as keys to making a successful transition into their subsequent academic or professional disciplines. Bethel’s engineering faculty bring a rich mix of engineering experience in commerce and industry, research and development, consulting and academia to the classroom. Our engineering program director also helps you select appropriate coursework; find internships or undergraduate research opportunities; clarify career interests; and prepare for the transition to an engineering school. Summer internships are available on campus through Bethel’s undergraduate research program and off campus through agencies such as the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.
Hands-On Labs With Latest Technology
The introduction to engineering course (ENGR101) that you take during your first semester at Bethel will introduce you to all areas of engineering.This course, as well as the other basic physics/engineering courses, provides a foundation in laboratory and research work. Emphasis is upon getting your hands on modeling tools and equipment as well as computer programming tools such as MATLAB™. The chemistry labs underwent significant upgrading with the recent addition to Middleton Hall of Science. These labs are some of the best you will see and are comparable to those available in the most prestigious research-based universities in the country.
A Formula For Success
Students who complete Bethel’s engineering program have an exceptional placement rate in their specialty field. Recent graduates work as flight test engineers, logic designers, chemists and mechanical engineers at NAVAIR, IBM, Abbott Labs and Douglas Engineering. You will also be prepared to pursue graduate education in engineering, science or mathematics, or in a complementary field such as business administration or law.
