Dr. Dave Schmidt received his BA from George Fox College in Newburg, Oregon and a Master of Divinity from the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana. He was awarded a PhD in history and religious studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1998, after completing his dissertation entitled “‘Till Christ Jesus Be Exalted’: Quaker Political Pamphlets During the Restoration of the Rump Parliament.” Prior to teaching at Bethel College, Dr. Schmidt worked and taught at UCSB, Whitworth College in Spokane, WA and Westmont College in California.

"My goal is to help students learn how individuals, ideas and institutions have shaped the course of human history. I am particularly concerned that Bethel graduates understand how the history of the people of God intertwines with that of the world as a whole. In support of this goal, my current research is on the history of the concept of Christendom. I am also writing my first extended work of fiction. It is a novel which revolves around the issue of euthanasia."

A native of Oregon, Dr. Schmidt enjoys travel. He has recently visited Bethel students studying in Ecuador and Beijing. He looks forward to leading a class on an extended visit to California and other “foreign” destinations - like London, England. He is a regular at the faculty noon time basketball games and hosts the History Film Festival in his home. His wife Carol is a bilingual elementary school teacher. They have 2 children. The eldest was married this past summer.
