Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)
The Bethel SIFE team gives students the opportunity to use the material that
they are learning in the classroom in the “real world”, while making a difference in someone else’s life. For example, this year the Bethel SIFE team organized eight community service projects ranging from organizing a food drive to help the hurricane victims in Florida to sponsoring a personal finance seminar for Bethel College students.
In addition to organizing community service projects, the Bethel SIFE team competes each year in Chicago against SIFE teams from other colleges. This year, the Bethel SIFE team was awarded regional champion and was invited to participate at the national competition in Kansas City, MO. A further bonus for students is that at the Chicago competition, numerous corporations attend the competition to recruit SIFE students for internships and for jobs.
SIFE is a great opportunity for students to become involved in the community, while acquiring valuable experience that will make them more marketable to potential employees. If you are interested in joining SIFE, please contact Aaron Schavey by email or at x3281.
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)
The Society for Human Resource Management is a nationally recognized organization that has chapters nationally, locally, and as student chapters. The Bethel Chapter of SHRM is very involved with both students and the local community. Each fall, SHRM organizes an event to educate students and others about a specific area of business. One notable topic from the past that brought over 75 students and others from the community was Violence in the Workplace.
In the spring semester, SHRM hosts a Resume Building workshop one week, and a Mock Interview/Resume Critique workshop the following. Both are designed to assist future graduates in building strong resumes and excellent interviewing skills. Several area business professionals come and assist with the program, further building relationships with the community.
Another event SHRM helps with is helping with the Michiana SHRM’s luncheons. Bethel students register arriving guests and sell raffle tickets. This is a great opportunity for students to network with local business and HR professionals. Students will also benefit from the knowledge the professionals share at these meetings. Often, internships or job offers stem from relationships built at the monthly Michiana SHRM meetings. Here is a link to the Michiana SHRM website: www.michianashrm.org.
Bethel SHRM is a great way for students to begin taking ideals and concepts leaned in the classroom and putting them into practice. It offers wonderful networking opportunities and fun ways to learn cutting edge business principles. For more information on joining SHRM, contact Dr. Leslie Greising at by email or at extension 7639.
