Language and Literature Department
Journalism
For those aspiring writers with a flair for news and feature writing, Journalism is available as a major (A.A. Degree) or minor area of study. Professors within the Language and Literature Division serve as instructors, editors and mentors to students both inside and out of the classroom.
Journalism students are encouraged to become involved in the campus publications and broadcasts, including the Bethel Beacon (newspaper), the Helm (yearbook) and Pilot Radio (radio station). Also, opportunities abound for students to take an extra step and experience the World Journalism Institute, the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the Summer Institute of Journalism, and internships at local media. Some eager students have found success in freelance writing for various newspapers and magazines in the region.
Throughout the program and with the guidance of instructors, students create a professional portfolio of their writing clips that displays to potential employers their personal skills, qualifications, personality and accomplishments. Courses within the Journalism program not only teach students the fundamentals of the profession, but also help them to produce material for their personal portfolios. Such courses include the following: Basic News Writing, Features & Nonfiction Writing, Editing, Layout and Design, Mass Media and Society, Persuasion, Photojournalism, Introduction to Public Relations, and Introduction to Advertising.
