Professional Writing
The Professional Writing A.A. degree was created for students who want to confront our culture through the art of crafting words in a creative, clear and effective manner. Beyond quality instruction in the classroom, students are encouraged to apply their knowledge by using outside resources through numerous writing contests, internships and freelance writing opportunities. Professors in the program often serve as mentors, providing one-on-one guidance and direction for students pursuing a career in the writing profession.
Those who completed the program in past years have pursued various careers related to writing, including editing, freelance writing, newspaper and magazine journalism, advertising, public relations, layout and design. Many have been published in national and online magazines, local newspapers and books.
The program includes preparation and completion of a personal writing portfolio, in which students may display their writing versatility, style and experience. Under the guidance of professors, who themselves are experienced writers, the portfolio is maintained and expanded throughout the program as students are challenged and exposed to more opportunities. By the end of the program, students will compile a completed portfolio that highlights their skills and may prove useful to potential employers.
The Professional Writing degree is available in both traditional and adult student formats. Because of differences between the two, only adult students are permitted to enroll in courses offered through the Adult College.
Courses offered as part of this major cover diverse areas of writing, including the following: Basic News Writing, Editing, Marketing a Manuscript, Creative Writing, Layout and Design, Writing for the Religious Market and Seminar in Writing.
