Associate Degree in Nursing Program (ADN)

Purpose

The purpose of the Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program at Bethel College is to prepare graduates in a Christian liberal arts setting to provide therapeutic nursing care to individuals and families within a community context. The ADN graduate is prepared to function in the roles of provider of care, manager of care and member within the profession of nursing. Care is provided in various structured health care settings. The ADN graduate is expected to demonstrate respect for life, a loving concern for individuals and an appreciation of the need for ongoing education. Therefore, the ADN graduate is prepared to:

Program Objectives

  1. Demonstrate critical thinking when making effective decisions while providing care for individuals, families and groups.
  2. Communicate effectively with individuals, families and groups.
  3. Modify therapeutic nursing interventions for culturally diverse individuals and families within a community context to achieve optimal functioning on the wellness-illness continuum.
  4. Integrate the nursing process as a basis for nursing care and health promotion for individuals and families throughout the life span in structured health care settings.
  5. Demonstrate an awareness of and respect for the spiritual dimensions of self and others in providing compassionate nursing care.
  6. Demonstrate professional behaviors of leadership, accountability and professionalism according to the legal and ethical standards of the nursing profession.
  7. Participate in self-development activities and organizations that advance, promote and improve nursing and health care.
  8. Apply principles of teaching and learning to promote the health of individuals and their families.
  9. Integrate knowledge from concepts of nursing, nursing research, the humanities and the social, biological and physical sciences when making nursing practice decisions and providing nursing care for individuals and families throughout the life span.
  10. Collaborate with members of the health care team in the management of nursing care for individuals, families and groups.

Standard ADN Program

The ADN program is available on the Bethel campus or at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN. The program consists of 72 hours of course work, which includes 35 hours of nursing courses, 18 hours of special cognates and 19 hours of general studies courses. The program may be completed part time over more semesters. A physical examination, immunizations and completion of a CPR course are required prior to beginning clinical courses. Nursing courses are usually offered in a day time format.

LPN to ADN Transition Program

Purpose

The Licensed Practical Nurse to Associate Degree in Nursing (LPN to ADN) program offered by Bethel College prepares men and women in a Christian atmosphere for careers as registered nurses. Upon successful completion of the one year program, an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is granted. Graduates may apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to earn licensure as registered nurses in Indiana and/or other states through endorsement.

LPN to ADN Program

The LPN to ADN program involves one summer and two semesters of full-time study over a one-year period after prerequisites are met. The program consists of a minimum of 72 hours of course work which includes 27 hours of nursing courses, 24 hours of special cognates, 15 hours of general studies courses and credit for Mobility testing. The program may be completed part time over more semesters. However, the nursing courses must be completed in four years. A physical examination, immunizations and completion of a CPR course are required prior to beginning clinical courses.

Prerequisites to Summer Transition Course

Course work from LPN program that may be transferred from Ivy Tech, Southwest Michigan (SWM) or other accredited schools. Course work from accredited schools will be evaluated on a Course-by-course basis.

Anatomy and Physiology I & II - 8 credits
(ANP 101 and 102 at Ivy Tech or BIOL 214 and 215 at SWM or if BIOL 201 was taken at SWM then BIOL 215 needs to be taken at Bethel College).
English Comp. - 3 credits
(ENG. 111 at Ivy Tech or ENGL 103 or 304 at SWM) (must have research paper)
Psychology - 3 credits
(PSY 101 at Ivy Tech or PSYC 101 at SWM)

Transfer Credits

Students may transfer credit for liberal arts courses and science courses from other accredited institutions providing the courses are equivalent to the required courses and a grade of "C" or better has been earned. Additionally, science courses must have been completed within the last seven years. The last 18 credit hours must be taken at Bethel College.
