Philosophy Department
Philosophy and Community
Philosophy
is best studied in community. The exchange of ideas with others forces
one to formulate thoughts crisply and cogently and to be open to challenge.
While not forcing conformity, a community of philosophers engenders
mutual respect and sharpening of the intellect as iron rubbing on
iron. We in the philosophy department (both professors and students)
spend a lot of time together both in the classroom and outside of
it. We believe that education is better conducted among friends than
among those who don't know each other. So our academic pursuits are
heavily sprinkled throughout the year with informal gatherings at
professors' homes where we eat together, play games, watch movies
and, of course, engage in conversation. These times make for a very
rewarding and enriching atmosphere in which we pursue wisdom.
