Department of Modern Language Studies
Classes
The Bethel-in-Spain programs offers students 9 credits in Spanish. 6 of the credits will be for coursework at DILE Cursos, a Spanish language institute in Salamanca, and 3 of the credits will be for either Spanish 352, Civilizations and Cultures of Spain or Art 115, Spanish Art and Architecture both of which will be taught by Program Director, Scott DeVries. On the program, students can satisfy the language requirement by registering for the Elementary I and II sequence (Spanish 161 and 162) or register for more advanced courses and earn credit toward a minor or major. Courses at DILE Cursos are taught by native professors of Spanish who are experts in foreign language pedagogy and employ a methodology of full immersion in the Spanish language.
Whether you are placed at the novice/beginner level or are a native or heritage speaker of the language, DILE Cursos will design a class especially for you along with students who are similar in ability and experience. The institute professes a student-centered philosophy of language teaching where proficiency in communicative tasks is primary and supplemented by instruction in reading, writing, and culture. For native or near-native speakers, the institute offers instruction in Spanish composition, rhetoric, culture, literature, and history.
Students can register for any of the following courses, listed in the Bethel Catalog, and take them at the institute:
161. Elementary Spanish I 162. Elementary Spanish II 163. International Spanish Experience 261. Intermediate Spanish I 265. Spanish for Textual Proficiency 360. Advanced Grammar and Composition 361. Spanish Conversation 363. Survey of Spanish Literature |
