2008 Award Recipients
These two outstanding alumni will be honored on November 8 at 7:00 p.m. during the Overtime: 50 Seasons Celebration.
Jody Martinez, Alumnus of the Year
Coach Mike Krzyzewski, who led the USA men’s Olympic basketball team to a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics, could have been referring to Bethel basketball coach Jody Martinez when he said, “Leaders have to search for the heart on a team, because the person who has it can bring out the best in everybody else.”
The word heart aptly describes Coach Martinez. Following a successful athletic career and coaching jobs for two high school boys’ teams in the Michiana area, Coach Martinez now serves as associate athletic director, head women’s basketball coach and Hall of Fame coordinator at Bethel College. His success in coaching is legendary, but his active church ministry, missions participation, and desire to build his team spiritually as well as athletically set him apart, and today we honor him as our 2008 Alumnus of the Year.
Richard Riddle, Professional Achievement Award
When Bethel College graduate Richard Riddle founded the Church & Casualty Insurance Agency in California in 1983, he probably never imagined that 25 years later his agency would have insured 6,000 nonprofit, faith-based organizations.
Today we honor Dick with the 2008 Professional Achievement Award for his vision in building an agency that has become the largest of its kind in the state and for a lifetime of professional and personal achievements, including his service as pastor, principal, board member and short-term missionary. He is a well-known Bethel graduate, recognized not only for his business acumen, but also for his dedication to the Lord, his family and his alma mater.
