Update on the Bridges Family
Many of you have called with concerns about former Bethel President Dr. Norman Bridges’ and his wife Janice’s health challenges. Below is a recent update on their conditions.
Dr. Bridges, Bethel’s president for 15 years, was recently diagnosed with cancer, undergoing a massive surgery to remove a cancerous kidney last June. He continues to deal with cancerous spots in his lungs, pelvis and ribs. The pain related to this is being well-managed with medication. The most recent development in his treatment protocol is the use of a drug similar to chemotherapy. At the moment his strength and energy levels are diminished, and this reality presents a real challenge for him. On an encouraging note, Janice has experienced a very encouraging recovering from knee surgery and just finished her last therapy session.
You may send cards to the Bridges at their home: 12274 E. Jefferson Blvd., Mishawaka, IN 46545. They are deeply appreciative of everyone’s concern and prayer support during this time.
The Bridges quietly celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 3 and are looking forward to having their three sons and all their families with them for Thanksgiving. Please pray that Dr. Bridges will feel well during their visit so they can enjoy this special time together.
Dr. Bridges graduated from Bethel in 1960 with a degree in English Education. He came back to Bethel in 1966 as the dean of students. He then served as vice president of administration for two years and professor of history and education for three years until 1976. Dr. Bridges left Bethel until 1989 when he returned as the president of Bethel College until 2004.
