Alumni Weekend Recap

The Homecoming Festivities got what some would call an “Extreme Makeover” complete with a name change to Alumni Weekend.

If you missed the festivities on Oct. 9 and 10, then you missed nice weather, affinity reunions, the 40 Year Celebration of Men’s Soccer, 5K run, the theatrical production of “The Boys Next Door” and a petting zoo. Yes, we said petting zoo. We have the fun pictures to prove it too!

Here’s the rundown of some of the events.

Pilots 5K Run/Walk

This year about 200 runners/walkers participated in the Pilots 5K Run/Walk and Kid's Fun Run, including 88-year-old Gertrud Gilbert (’69). She was the oldest competitor to participate. (pictured)

Soccer Reunion

More than 40 soccer alumni showed up ready to play in the alumni game, including former Bethel soccer player, Aaron Carpenter (’83). Carpenter played on the team from 1979-1983. He says connecting with past soccer players on the field was a great way to celebrate Bethel’s 40th Soccer Anniversary.

“At times it felt like the good ol’ days, but at other times I was reminded that while your mind is still sharp, your body doesn’t always keep up,” says Carpenter.

Connecting with friends at the cookout afterwards proved to be a good time too. It gave everyone a chance to reminisce about their time together at Bethel while catching up on life. Carpenter has at least one fond memory.

“My fondest memory in playing against Purdue Calumet in early November in Chicago, and it was snowing.  I had just returned from Brazil, where it’s always warm, and I remember thinking to myself ‘what have I gotten myself into?! This is crazy.’”

Topping off an end to a great reunion, the current men’s soccer team battled the Taylor University Trojans for a win.

Winter Escape

Some of you are probably feeling sad after reading about all the missed fun. Don’t worry, the alumni services team is planning another get-together — this time around the fireplace and out in the snow. Start planning for Winter Escape Feb. 19 and 20 at Bethel. Think of it as a weekend family vacation with the bonus of snow — probably! More details to come.
