A Typical Weekend for a Typical Bethelian
I’m sure everyone can relate to this feeling: it’s Friday afternoon, you just got out of your last class for the day and even though you have a huge pile of homework to complete you decide that the best thing to do is to simply rest… and goof off for the weekend. Welcome to my weekend.
Of course I had great plans for finishing my room decorations (thus far I have a half completed tree on my wall…) but somewhere between World Civ. ending and making my way back to my dorm, my mind subconsciously decided that I was going to be completely unproductive all weekend. Well, actually, I don’t think I’m being completely fair to myself. I did some great things, they just weren’t necessarily homework related. In fact, here are the highlights from what a typical weekend on campus looks like:
1- Late Night Tradewind’s Adventure. Honestly, it’s not the weekend unless it includes Tradewind’s– the great local restaurant that accepts Bethel Bucks. I’ll tell ya what, any Friday night is made instantly better with good company, hot chocolate, and a big ol’ stack of flapjacks!
2- Port-a-Party. This year I have the awesome opportunity to work in the Service Learning Office, which is the office that plans all the service events. This Saturday we did a new event called Port-a-Party. We had three groups go to different locations and throw a party; (a portable party. Thus the Port-a-Party… clever, right?) I got to go to a nursing home where we threw a Hawaiian themed bingo party. Honestly, it was a blast! What’s more fun than listening to the hilarious comments the residents make? Listening to them with a bunch of your favorite fellow Bethel friends!
3- The Office Marathon. Okay, I’m probably border line obsessive with The Office, but feel like I really can’t help it. It’s not my fault my room happens to have a rockin’ TV and some equally rockin’ people who live here with me. It just makes sense.
4- Walmart Expedition. There’s almost always something to get at Walmart, so it makes sense that every weekend should include a trip. They’re even better when there’s a detour through Dairy Queen on the way back!
5- Uhm… This: Sometimes after eating ice-cream and watching three hours of The Office, sitting around just won’t cut it any more. So you need… creative ways to keep yourself busy…

(by the way, this is MUCH more difficult than you would think!)
6- Jesus Time With Some Great Friends. For a bit over a year now, I have been a part of a Bible study with some girls I lived with in Shupe and the Shupe RD. We meet on Sunday nights for about 2 hours and dive into what God is doing in our lives. It is without a doubt one of the highlights of my week! I think these individual Bible studies are what makes Bethel such an encouraging environment: we have tons of options. Whether you’re looking for something with the girls on your floor, with people interested in the same things as you are, or with just a group of your friends, Bethel has an atmosphere that encourages spiritual growth in all forms.
Of course, not every weekend looks the exact same, but I feel as though this is a pretty good sum up of a relaxing weekend on campus. Throw in a couple Pilot basketball games, a trip to the Acorn, and a euchre tournament and you’ve got yourself a Bethelian!
