Academic Summer Camps
Bethel’s Academic Camps provide campers, from ages 7 – 17, with the opportunity to explore the vast world of Academics. Our camps are run by college professors who have significant experience and expertise in their respective fields that they are channeling into a fun, hands-on experiential learning format.
New This Year! All campers who successfully complete a Bethel Academic Camp will receive a $250 financial award toward Bethel College.

Theatre Camp

Don Hunter, Theatre Arts Production ManagerDo you enjoy creating characters? Do you enjoy taking on different personalities? Then join us this summer learning all you can about the fun of performing on the stage. Each day we will learn new games and exercises that help build on your own natural creativity and confidence. We will explore the world of improvisation and building a character as well as delving into some script work with short scenes and playlets. Let us help you bring out your inner actor!

Entomology

Asst. Professor of Biology & EcologyWe will explore the world of insects by finding and studying them in their natural habitats. We will then collect them and bring them into the laboratory for further study under a microscope. Finally, we will learn to mount the insects according to standard scientific methods so that they are preserved for future study. Our adventures will be centered on different habitats each day, including aquatic habitats, forested habitats, and Bethel’s own native prairie habitat. The insects we encounter will range from dragonflies to butterflies and everything in between.

Senior Vocal Performance MajorWith singing, acting, and choreography, class members will put together a program that reflects their creativity, and demonstrates their talents. Guests will help guide the class members as they prepare for the performance, which will be presented Friday, July 15th, during class time.

Anatomy

Asst. Professor of BiologyTake a week and travel through the human body with surgeon and Bethel professor, Steve Galat, M.D. Each day we will explore a new organ system in the body with activities, as well as lab participation with models and fresh pig organs. You will study the skin and bones, heart, lungs, digestive and the nervous system.

Sculpture

Asst. Professor of ArtSculpture is an artist process where an individual creates an object that is usually viewed from all sides or “in the round.” Sculpture is different from painting or drawing because it is 3-demensional. During sculpture camp students will be learning ways to create 3-dimensional work through processes such as hand-building with clay, assemblage with wood, and using things like plaster gauze and wire to express some sort of idea. If your child is inventive and likes to work with his/her hands, they will enjoy the experience of using simple materials to created their own unique works of sculptural art.

Modern Art Masters

Asst. Professor of ArtThe Modern Artists were a group of individuals from the late 1800’s through the mid-1900’s who were best known for abstraction and experimentation. Young children connect with the modern artists because the pressure of recreating reality has been cast aside in the spirit of investigation. All things are possible in Modern Art. If your child is interested in art and wants to learn more about what it means to create work like a modern artist, they will enjoy this camp. The camp experience is hands on and will provide a great opportunity to strengthen fine motor skills such as painting, cutting, and drawing

Music Theory

Asst. Professor of MusicCome spend a week full of music games! Through this camp, students will acquire more musical knowledge through different games and activities. A basis of musical theory will be covered as well as sight-singing and ear training games. Whether a beginning or advanced musician, each camper will leave with an expanded foundation in music.

Instrumental Ensemble

Asst. Professor of MusicPiano, strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion—come develop your ensemble skills! During this week, players will be grouped in various ensembles, learn new repertoire, gain more experience in the art of ensemble playing, and perform their new repertoires in the Friday afternoon concert. Become a better musician and meet others who love music.

Sports Communication

Associate Faculty in CommunicationCommunication meets Competition. You don’t have be an athlete in order to be a major player in the sports arena. Through our camp you will be equipped with the communication tools and skills needed to go one on one with the best staff and participants that Bethel’s Athletic Camps have to offer. This will include learning how to take photos, shoot video, and conduct interviews for print and broadcast media. Do you have what it takes? If so…game on!

Creative Writing: What a Character!

Professor/Freelance WriterWrite the perfect character! You’ve thought of a great plotline for your novel, so how do you fill it in with characters who work? Explore the world of writing by building lifelike characters through narrative description, dialogue and action. Campers will learn to build their novels around realistic and exciting characters as they write their novels.

Youth Gospel Choir

Gospel Choir Director
Bethel College Gospel Choir MembersJoin in with this exciting choral ensemble opportunity to participate in the artistic expression of gospel music. Dedicated to reflecting the cultural diversity of artistic expression, Youth Gospel Choir camp emphasizes the development of vocal skills, group singing, and appreciation for diverse musical styles and songs from other cultures. Campers will make a joyful noise in fun and meaningful ways while developing their talent and gaining gospel music experience. The camp will culminate with participation in a Sunday morning church service on June 19th.
