Assistant Professor Sign Language Interpreting

Bethel College in Northern Indiana,  is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor for their Sign Language Interpreting program to begin fall of 2012..Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses of American Sign Language, team teaching interpreting courses, student recruitment, public relations, assessment, and involvement in the college community. Faculty members are also expected to maintain active scholarship and participate in professional development activities.

Qualifications

M.A. required, Ph.D. preferred, in the area of education, linguistics, deafness, sign language interpreting or related field. ASLTA certification required, provisional or working towards certification. Experience teaching ASL at the post-secondary level preferred.

A successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to liberal studies and working in a bicultural environment as well as skill in curriculum development and the evaluation of student language skills. He or she will support multicultural competence initiatives and involvement in the d/Deaf community.

Working Conditions

  • Onsite classes are generally scheduled between 8 AM and 5 PM. 
  • Some classes, laboratories, events and/or meetings may be scheduled in the evening or on weekends. 
  • Work is generally indoors within temperature controlled environments.
  • Work takes place in moderately quiet classroom and office environments.
  • Work may include mentoring students outside of classroom in interpreted events that have a wide range of conditions.
  • Work takes place in a bilingual environment. A faculty member who can hear is expected to use a sign language with or without voice when within sight of Deaf faculty.

Physical Demands

Candidates must possess the physical, mental, and emotional capabilities to satisfy the essential job functions listed above, including:

  • 1/2 of time standing and moving about the department;
  • Carrying, pushing, or pulling parts to areas up to 40 pounds;
  • Stooping and kneeling;
  • Typing, entering data, and communicating with students and colleagues by email;
  • Clear vision at 3 feet and at 20 inches or less;
  • Physically able to use hands, arms, and face to communicate via sign language.
