"Guidelines for Dealing with Stress: What I Learned from the Airline Ticket Agents" by Goshen residents Mr. Ron and Dr. Ruth Davidhizar is a featured article in the April 2006 nursing publication of Healthcare Traveler. Dr. Ruth Davidhizar is the dean of nursing at Bethel College and Mr. Ron Davidhizar is a housing provider in and around Goshen, Ind. The Davidhizars are regular authors and contributors to health care journals on management and stress related topics.
The article outlines methods airline ticket agents use to handle stress when planes are grounded or delayed. The stress management tips ticket agents use can be applied to managers in other occupations who are under stress and in crisis situations. Eight main points are delineated:
1. Stay calm and pleasant amidst turmoil
2. Give choices to increase feelings of control
3. Don't let urgency decrease accuracy
4. Provide hope
5. Offer clear, ongoing directions
6. Use a person-center focus
7. Humor helps
8. Provide regular updates
