Family, friends, and nursing faculty celebrated the induction of 63 new members into Sigma Theta Tau International Nu Omicron Chapter-at-Large on Sunday, April 11, 2010. The inductees were comprised of 22 nursing students from Bethel College, 25 from Goshen College and 16 from Saint Mary’s College.
The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, is named from the Greek words Storgé, Tharsos and Timé meaning “love,” “courage” and “honor.” Nursing students in baccalaureate and graduate programs are invited to join based on excellence in scholarship.
Opening remarks and introductions were given by Patricia Keresztes, Ph.D, RN, CCRN, president of Nu Omicron. William Duffy, RN, MJ, CNOR and father of Saint Mary’s inductee Patrocinia Grace Duffy, presented the keynote speech. He advised the audience that nurses hold the power to change a patient’s life and the lives of the patient’s family. Nurses must be comfortable with this power. He suggested that each generation of nurses, through their perspective and wisdom, has helped to advance the profession. He encouraged this generation of nurses to advance the profession through quality, compassionate healthcare by giving their best and thus giving the best opportunity to patients.
Following the induction ceremony, the 2010 essay winners receiving a Nu Omicron nursing scholarship were announced.
