Bethel College and Keller Park Church are teaming up to sponsor a “Cinderella Day” on March 26 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Keller Park Church, 1003 W Bryan St., in South Bend, Ind. Bethel students have collected nearly 40 gently used prom dresses, sizes 2 to 18W, to sell to teen girls from the Keller Park Community, the Safe House and the Boys and Girls Club. Each dress is $5.
Other teens who need a dress at a lower cost can participate as well. Shoes, purses, gloves and jewelry will also be available, but will not be sold outside of a dress purchase.
Nearly 20 female students from Bethel will volunteer their time and skills to help teens find a dress and provide them with minor alterations, accessories and advice on how to do their hair for the big day. Employees of The Body Shop will provide free makeovers using products from their own makeup line.
Junior Leah Smith, with the help of the Bethel College office of service learning, is coordinating the event. Smith began collecting the dresses in boxes that were placed in the women’s dorms in February, knowing that Bethel’s campus would be the best place to get donations.
She says the idea sparked after the Feb. 16 “revival” chapel service on campus. (Watch the service here.) This particular chapel lasted more than seven hours. The service led to responses from students in several different ways in the days following, including worship services, Bible studies and classroom discussions.
“Dennis Engbrecht, [Bethel’s senior vice president], was talking about how we all have things we can give away and my first thought was clothes,” explained Smith. “God's been teaching me a lot in the process as well; to depend on Him for all my needs and that I can never pull this off on my own strength. He's been so faithful and I know He will continue to open doors so this event can bring Him glory.”
