As part of freshman and transfer student orientation, about 300 new students are serving the community by working on landscaping projects for the Mishawaka Parks Department. The students, along with faculty and returning student mentors, will complete more than 600 hours of community service on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
The morning group will start from 9-11 a.m. at Beutter Park, located off Mishawaka Avenue on the former Ball Band/Uniroyal site, just west of the Main Street bridge along the river. The afternoon group will work from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at other various Mishawaka parks.
The purpose of today’s activity is to introduce new students to one of Bethel’s core values — service to others — at the very beginning of their time at Bethel. The college is consistently recognized for its service, being listed as 12th in the country for community service by Washington Monthly and being named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.
Additional volunteer opportunities for Bethel students, faculty and staff include an all-school service day on Tuesday, Oct. 1; a program where residence halls team up with a nonprofit and work with them throughout the year; and various other opportunities coordinated through Bethel’s service learning office.
