Congratulations! You have made it to the Interview Round! But now is NOT the time to feel like you have it in the bag. If anything, now is when your work actually begins.

Want to score brownie points with an interviewer? Research the company and understand what you would be doing. You would be amazed at the number of people who walk into an interview and have no idea what the company manufactures, distributes or accomplishes. How can you sell yourself for a position if you do not understand how your strengths would contribute to the success of the company?

Anticipate questions that an employer may ask, and PRACTICE how you would answer them. Keep your answers brief and concise, but add interesting stories and examples to supplement strength or skill questions.  J.T. How is that interview outfit coming together? The night before the big interview, you do not want to be tearing around the dorm trying to scrounge up a dress shirt!  You’ll wind up with a shirt that is 2 sizes smaller than you need! Not a good look for anyone.  SENIORS, at this point, your interview outfit should be pressed and ready to go in your closet, so when that interview call comes in, you are ready to hit the ground running!

Virtual Interviews

More and more employers are conducting initial job interviews either over the phone, Skype or other online video services, hoping to get a better feel for candidates before they extend an invitation for an in-person interview.  Many people are surprised to learn a little preliminary prep on their end, could lead to that invitation.

During the Interview 

You researched the company. You practiced interview answers. You are looking mighty fine.  The time has come for the actual interview!

During the wrap-up of the interview you should find out when they will be making a decision. If the employer does not offer that information, it is your responsibility to inquire.

After the Interview

You have one other responsibility before you can consider this interview “complete”. It is very important to send a handwritten note thanking the employer for their time, stressing your enthusiasm for the position and why you would be a great addition to their team. Follow-up will dramatically increase the number of job offers you get. It is one of the most powerful tools you have to influence the situation.
