Information Security

Information security is becoming an increasingly greater challenge with the technological advancements in virtually every aspect of our lives. The world's reliance on computer-based operations has greatly enhanced quality of life and services but has also introduced a new breed of criminal. Everyday we are bombarded with unwanted emails and phone calls that - although mostly an annoyance - clearly demonstrate how easy it is for someone to access and violate our personal and private information with potentially dangerous consequences.

Be very cautious about giving your name, address and telephone number to people with whom you are not familiar. Remember how annoyed you got the last time a solicitor came to your front door or a telemarketer called you at dinner time? Companies will pay big money for your contact information; even worse, criminals will take full advantage of this same information.

When posting messages or bulletins on community boards, refrain from giving your name, room number and extension. Never leave paperwork containing sensitive information lying around. If it has phone numbers, addresses, account numbers or social security numbers on it, keep it with you and destroy it completely before discarding. Identity theft is a real threat and taking a few extra precautions will reduce your risk of becoming a victim.
