Dormitory Safety

Most crimes on campus have been identified as crimes of opportunity. Thefts on campus usually involve bookbags and vehicles, many of these thefts could have been avoided. Every resident can do their part to prevent crimes by acting responsibly.

  • Do not prop open doors. Meet visitors at the door.
  • Do not let in people you do not know. Your are responsible for the people you let in.
  • Do not tamper with door locking mechanisms. Never use tape, pine, etc. to keep the door from locking shut.
  • Use caution when leaving notes or signs on your doors letting people know you are gone for extended periods of time. This can alert potential thieves to your absence.
  • Always lock your door when leaving, even if only going down the hall for a “minute”. Always lock your windows.
  • Do not allow strangers to enter your room or dorm unless they are properly identified.
  • Secure large sums of money, jewelry, or valuable items in your room. Do not advertise your expensive items.
  • Lock bicycles to bicycle racks when not in use.

Parking Lot Safety

  • Lock your doors and roll up your windows when leaving your vehicle.
  • Do not leave anything of value stored in your vehicle.
  • Detach any type of detachable face stereo and take it with you.
  • When traveling to your car after dark, walk swiftly and have your keys ready.
