Four Year Plan
Freshman Year
- Stick with liberal studies classes to discover your interests
- Identify your interests, abilities, skills and values
- Research occupations and majors with the CISC, academic advisor, faculty , various professionals
or through online resources
- Develop academic and career goals
- Strive to gain attributes employers are seeking: interpersonal skills, leadership skills or teamwork abilities
- Pursue clubs, sports, or student organizations that will build skills
- Create a résumé and send it to the CISC as a word attachment for helpful changes
- Register with Career Services Online to search the database for possible summer and/or part-time jobs. Choose your summer job wisely! Will this job enhance your résumé?
Sophomore Year
- Update your résumé and upload it to Career Services Online
- Conduct informational interviews with professionals currently working in your career field
- Talk with CISC professionals, academic advisors and faculty about minors that compliment your major
- Join a student professional organization that matches your career interests
- Volunteer your services in your community or local church—GREAT résumé enhancer!
- Develop job search skills
- Take career assessment test in CISC if still uncertain on career direction
- Go to Career Services Online and search the database for possible internships
- Meet with Director of CISC in late fall to talk about how to line up an internship for summer or fall of junior year
Junior Year
- Update your résumé and upload it to Career Services Online
- Identify post-graduate options: grad school? Full-time employment?
- Cultivate relationships with professors and employers who can serve as references for you next year
- Increase your participation in student organizations and clubs by serving in leadership capacity
- Go to Career Services Online and check out the database of available jobs and internships
- Gain "real-life" experience through an internship EVEN IF IT IS NOT REQUIRED
- Attend career fairs and workshops
- Take graduate or professional school examinations
Senior Year
- Revise and strengthen your résumé and make sure it is uploaded to Career Services Online
- Purchase interview clothing and have them pressed and ready to go at all times
- Make an appointment with your academic advisor early in academic year to ensure that you are on track for graduation
- Research information about positions and potential companies. Don’t forget to search the Career Services Online database for possible jobs.
- Write cover letters and have them critiqued by a CISC professional
- Schedule a mock interview appointment with the CISC
- Visit grad schools and complete applications by school deadlines
- Complete Graduation Survey to help us complete our statistics
