Meningitis Vaccination Clinic
Students who are interested in receiving a meningitis vaccination may call the Saint Joseph County Health Department. They can be reached at 574.256.6230. Additional information on meningitis can be found at http://www.acha.org/projects_programs/meningitis/disease_info.cfm.
MRSA
What is MRSA? Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a type of skin or soft tissue infection that is resistant to most standard antibiotics including Penicillin but is treatable with other antibiotics. Wound drainage or pus is very infectious. (See MRSA fact sheet)
Steps to Prevent MRSA Infection:
- WASH YOUR HANDS—for 20 seconds with soap and water. If soap and water are not available then use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
- TREAT CUTS, SCRAPES, AND ABRASIONS IMMEDIATELY. Keep wounds covered until healed. If a red, swollen “spider bite” appears, get immediate medical attention.
- AVOID CONTACT WITH OTHERS WOUNDS OR BANDAGES.
- SHOWER AFTER PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Bacteria grow best in warm, moist, environments such as those created after physical activity.
- AVOID SHARING PERSONAL ITEMS SUCH AS TOWELS, RAZORS, BAR SOAP, BEDDING, CLOTHING, etc.
- SANITIZE GYM EQUIPMENT BEFORE AND AFTER USE. To effectively kill MRSA, use an EPA registered disinfectant. For a list of products effective against MRSA, go to http://epa.gov/oppad001/chemregindex.htm

Travel Vaccines
Students going abroad for study or Task Force teams may need travel vaccines. You may call the Saint Joseph Health Department Mishawaka Clinic at 574.256.6230 to make an appointment and inquire about costs.
Plan to begin the vaccination process at least six weeks before leaving.
