Baseball Splits At Huntington
Game Summary
The Bethel College Pilots split doubleheader with the Foresters of Huntington University in Huntington, Ind. on Saturday afternoon. Bethel came up a run short in the first game, losing by a score of 3-2 while they would come back and pick up a win in the second game 10-5.
Bethel jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game one. Nelson Sanchez singled to left with two outs followed by Reid Spitaels’ triple to deep right-center field to drive in Sanchez for the first run.
The Foresters, however, quickly answered back in the bottom half of the inning. The game would remain tied 1-1 heading into the sixth inning. Nelson Sanchez went deep with two outs in the top of the sixth to put the Pilots in the lead, but not for long as the Foresters would drive in a run for the tie in the bottom of the seventh. Huntington tacked on the game winner in the bottom of the eighth for the final 3-2 margin. Elliot Rowe pitched well despite the loss as he threw seven and two thirds innings while giving up only one earned run.
Pilots’ bats drove in more runs in the second game as they tallied 10 runs on 12 hits. Leading the way was Sanchez again as he went 3-4 with 4 RBI and three runs scored. Jon Rolon stepped up as well with his 2-2 performance with 3 RBI. On the mound, Branden Paulun recorded his fourth win of the season as he went six and a third innings after coming in for relief of starter Chris Zart.
Today’s split puts Bethel two games behind Spring Arbor and in fourth place in the MCC. The Pilots record is 15-7 and they remain .500 overall with a 20-20 record.
Bethel will take the field again against MCC leading and NAIA No. 25 ranked Spring Arbor University Tuesday afternoon. The Pilots host the Cougars in a big doubleheader with a 1:00 pm start time.
