Baseball Drops Two To Spring Arbor

Box Score: Game 1 Game 2

Final Game 1 Game 2
Bethel College Pilots: 5 3
Spring Arbor University: 19 9

Game Summary

The NAIA No. 21 ranked Spring Arbor University Cougars were a little too much for the Pilots on Wednesday afternoon as they took both games of a doubleheader from Bethel by scores of 19-5 in game one and 9-3 in the second.

The Pilots would jump out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning after Cameron Branock led off for Bethel with a single to center. Branock would advance to second on a Justin Oprins sacrifice bunt. Then, Nelson Sanchez would hit a single to left which drove in Branock for the run. Spring Arbor would answer in the top of the second with six runs of their own to pull away for good.

Pilots pitchers Chad Emberton and Chris Zart didn’t fair well as the Cougars would scored all 19 earned runs on their 20 hits. The Pilots made it interesting in the third as they put up two more runs to pull within three. Spring Arbor answered right back with 10 runs in the fourth and three in the fifth and final inning.

The Cougars continued their momentum from game one right from the get go to start game two with an 8-0 run through the first four innings. BC answered with a run in the fourth and two in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough. Pilots pitchers Lance Schrock and JJ Dubois couldn’t find an answer to Spring Arbor‘s hitters as they put up nine runs in the second game.

Bethel was able to connect for eight hits but only managed to put across three runs. Nelson Sanchez would go deep for a home run, which now brings his home run tally to seven for the year. Sanchez went 2-3 with a homerun, an RBI, and one run scored. Tony Bruns went 2-2 with an RBI, and Reid Spitaels went 2-3 with a triple and two runs scored in the final contest.

The losses drop the Pilots into fifth place in the MCC with a 15-9 record and 20-22 overall this season. The Pilots have a quick turn around as they travel to Elgin, Ill. to take on Judson University on Thursday afternoon. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.
