50th Anniversary Pilot Profiles - Gary Fry
Bethel College Basketball will be profiling athletes from the past leading up to a celebration of the 50 years of Pilot Basketball this November
Gary Fry, one of the first two players to play four years at Bethel, established a number of firsts during his career running the hardwood at Bethel.
Noted for a one-handed push shot from the corner, Fry scored 20 points in Bethel’s first victory ever, a 69-66 triumph over Fort Wayne Bible in the 1958-59 season. He led the team with 80 points in Bethel’s first varsity campaign. A 6-2 forward, Fry led the Pilots' attack all four years and established a career scoring record with 900 points.
He also became the first player to return as coach in 1963-64 and finished with an 8-26 record in two years.
Fry played three years of basketball and football at Jimtown High School. He hit .469 in four years of high school baseball action and threw the shot put for the track team. Fry was also elected class president.
