50th Anniversary Pilot Profiles - Ron Holmes

Bethel College Basketball will be profiling athletes from the past leading up to a celebration of the 50 years of Pilot Basketball this November

Teamed with Everett Walterhouse, Ron Holmes helped spark the most offensive minded teams in Bethel history.

Holmes and Walerhouse paced the attack as Bethel averaged 92.5 points in 1966-1967 and set a school record with a 95.2 mark in 1967-1968. The pair were also key figures when the Pilots set a school record with 137 points versus Michigan Christian.

Many times overshadowed by Walterhouse, Holmes stole the spotlight with a brilliant performance against Judson in 1967-1968 when the 5’11 swingman set Bethel records with 21 field goals and 45 points in a win over the Eagles.

Holmes set a school standard by averaging 22.7 in 1967-1968 to finish with 589 points. He also set another mark with a 12 of 14 field goal shooting effort against Davenport.

Named co-captain in 1967-1968, Holmes earned Turkey Classic All Tourney honors in 1966 and 1967.
Ironically, both Holmes and Walterhouse surpassed Larry Baughman’s career scoring record as juniors in 1966-1967. Holmes, who finished with an 18.2 career average, gained on Walterhouse in 1967-1968 but finished No. 2 in career scoring. The Pilots were 37-51 during his career.

Holmes was four year letterman at Madison High School. He led his team in free throw shooting in 1962 and was the leading scorer in 1963. Holmes also lettered in baseball and track.

Don Holmes, Ron’s brother, later attended Bethel and earned MVP honors in 1970-1971.
