50th Anniversary Pilot Profiles - Junior Doty
Bethel College Basketball will be profiling athletes from the past leading up to a celebration of the 50 years of Pilot Basketball this November
A 5-9 guard from Wakarusa High School, Junior Doty turned in three brilliant years at Bethel.
His best season might have been in 68-69 when he scored 415 points (14.8) and averaged 8 rebounds (224) a game despite shooting only 37.6% from the field and 67% from the free throw line. He also earned the Coach’s Award for Outstanding Defensive play. He earned the Sportsmanship trophy in the ’69 Grace Turkey Classic.
Doty ran into injury problems as a junior but still tallied 410 points in 29 games (14.1), averaged 5 rebounds a game and topped the Pilots with 126 assists. Doty and Greg Conrad, another top star of that era, were high school teammates at Wakarusa.
Both Doty and Conrad were named to the Malone Tourney team in 69-70, the first tourney championship in Bethel history.
A glandular problem forced Doty to miss the ’70-71 season.
