50th Anniversary Pilot Profiles - Dean Weirich
Bethel College Basketball will be profiling athletes from the past leading up to a celebration of the 50 years of Pilot Basketball this November
One of the greatest prep players in Elkhart County history, Dean Weirich transferred to Bethel as a sophomore after attending Ball State and Ivy Tech.
A 6-4 forward at Northridge High School, Weirich set an Elkhart County record with 1,823 career points. He averaged 31.8 in ’71-72.
Weirich continued to set records at Bethel, posting a new single season mark of 665 points the 9th best NCCAA total in the country in ’75-76 and a new career average record of 22.9 in 44 games.
Noted for his range, Weirich hit 46 percent from the field in a junior season hampered by injuries. He hit 49.5 percent from the floor as a senior.
“Weirich is undoubtedly the best shooter to play at Bethel,” said coach Tom Firestone.
Twice named Bethel MVP (’75 and ’76) Weirich earned NCCAA All American second team honors in ’76. He was also named to the NCCAA District III team and the NAIA District 21 unit.
