“Words really can’t express what Derek means to our program. He cares so much for his teammates and he is a great teammate. I like the fact the Derek can shoot the ball. I know that when teams lock in on players inside, he can knock down that perimeter shot.” -Coach Lightfoot
As a Junior (08/09)
Derek appeared in 22 games on the season in a limited role off the bench, more than doubling his appearances from his previous season. He averaged 5.2 minutes per game. Derek scored in 11 of those games, also more than doubling his scoring average, up to 2.5 per game.
Derek rewrote his own career recordbook, posting personal bests and career highs in every single category. For the season, Derek made an impressive 18-of-22 from the field, for an 81.8% clip, including 10-of-12 from the three point line and 8-of-8 from the free throw line—almost unbelievable given the lack of time he had to get into the “flow” of the game.
Derek’s best game of his career came on 11/18 vs. Purdue Calumet, where Derek posted career highs in points (13), rebounds (3), steals (2), 3-pointers (3-of-3), and free throws (4-of-4). Derek did not miss a shot off the bench in 13 minutes of action.
Derek scored 6 points on 2-of-2 from the three point line and dished out a career-high 4 assists in his first NAIA National Tournament game against Johnson & Wales.
Derek also posted career highs in blocks (1 vs. Judson, 12/13), minutes played (22 vs. Holy Cross, 12/9), and field goals (4-of-5 vs. PU North Central, 11/7).

As a Sophomore (07/08)
Seeing most of his time on the junior varsity squad, Derek did however appear in 10 games for the Pilots. His best game in the blue and white came against Kuyper College on 12/8 during the Gates Automotive Classic, where he scored 3 points on 1-of-1 shooting, pulled down 2 rebounds, dished out 2 assists, and collected 1 steal in 10 minutes of action.
Derek scored a season-high 4 points on 2-of-2 shooting in 14 minutes of action in a 104-34 blowout win against Holy Cross in the Bethel Tip-Off Classic on 11/3.
Derek’s most important role with the team came during practice time, where Derek was a part of the scout team. Often simulating the next opponent’s most active, relentless player, Derek prepared the starting five to the best of his ability countless times throughout the season. The preparation paid off, as indicated by the team’s success.
