“Jake has a great basketball IQ. He can pass well and defend. He plays well in the team concept here at Bethel. Jake has gotten stronger and that will help him which will help us. He will need to continue to get stronger and build more endurance as a player. He gave us good minutes in situations last year. With graduation losses we will need Jake to have a break-out year.” -Coach Lightfoot
As a Freshman (08/09)
Jake saw limited action on the varsity squad as he was still making adjustments from small-time high school basketball to college basketball.
Jake split his time with the junior varsity, but still made 22 appearances for the Pilots, averaging 1.9 points and 1.1 rebounds in 8.0 minutes of action per game.
Jake made quite a first impression on the Wiekamp Wackos. In his first collegiate game, Jake converted on a career-high 7-of-8 free throws. He also grabbed a career-high 5 rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
Jake continued his fine performances from the free throw line the rest of the season, finishing 11-of-12 from the line, good for third best on the team.
Jake established a career-high in assists, dishing out 2 against Judson on 11/14 in the Pilots’ first road game of the season. Jake provided solid play off the bench, going 3-for-3 from the field for 6 points, helping to secure the Pilots’ victory.
Despite not seeing much action through the MCC season, Jake came on strong in the MCC tournament, setting career highs in points (8), field goals (4), and field goal attempts (5) against Taylor on 2/25 and three-point attempts (1) against Spring Arbor on 2/28.
He played 19 minutes in those two games of the MCC tournament, his highest two-game stretch since he played 32 minutes in two games against Holy Cross and Trinity International on 12/9 and 12/12, respectively.
