Men's Soccer Opens Season With Draw
Game Summary
The Bethel College men’s soccer team opened up their season with a 1-1 tie against NAIA No. 20 ranked Madonna University on a soggy Friday night in Mishawaka.
The Pilots battled the nationally ranked Crusaders to a scoreless tie through the first half of play with Bethel holding an 8-5 shot advantage in the opening half. The tie was quickly broken two minutes into the second half as Madonna jumped out to a 1-0 lead. The Pilots had reason to remain optimistic as less than a minute later Arran Horton crossed a long ball which Joao Couto headed in to tie the game at 1-1.
Shortly after the game tying goal, both offenses stalled as the rain began to fall more heavily. The Pilots managed to attempt another eight shots to Madonna’s four in the second half, but were unable to convert the game winning goal as the match ended in the 1-1 draw.
“I was pleased with how we played and for all the opportunities we created,” said Head Coach Thiago Pinto. “It was an intense game and we had a great composure throughout the entire game. We will keep working hard in the things we did well and correct the mistakes we made.”
The Pilots now travel to Iowa next week for road contests at Grand View University and Saint Ambrose University.
