Men's Soccer vs Goshen College - Wednesday, October 4, 2006
Game Summary
Bethel’s Men’s Soccer team dropped its third game of the season 2-1 to rivals Goshen college on a windy Wednesday night at Goshen.
The game began tentatively with neither side willing to commit players forward or pressure the opposing team when without possession. The songs and chants going back and forth between the two sets of fans created an intimidating atmosphere that was clearly having an effect on the players on the pitch. Early on, Oscar Lomeli had a goal disallowed when having finished a cross from Juan Rio De La Loza, he was deemed offside. Midway through the first half however Bethel did make the break through when Arran Patrick played a one-two at the top of the area with Peter Taberner and finished low into the far post. The goal didn’t break Goshen hearts, however, as they responded five minutes later. Goshen beat the offside trap on the left wing and dribbling unfettered into the penalty area. Bethel goalie Scott Terry produced an outstanding save on the first shot, but was helpless as the second ricocheted off a Bethel defender and back to junior forward Tony Janzen, who had no trouble from two yards.
The second half saw Goshen win most parts of the pitch even if the goal was hard coming. Janzen was a threat for most of the second half with his powerful running and senior Joel Miller was a constant threat from set-pieces. It was Miller who produced the game winner with seven minutes remaining from a corner on the left. Miller rose above Bethel’s defense and powered a header into the goal from 10 yards. It was a deserved result for Goshen, as the Pilots simply have not played to their potential yet this season.
Men's Soccer is now 6-3-1 (2-1). The Pilots' next match is Saturday, October 7, 2006, 3:00 pm at Winona lake, IN vs. Grace College
