MCC All-Conference: Josh Kiefer
The Bethel College men’s tennis team concluded another successful fall season by placing 6th at the MCC Tournament in Marion, Indiana. Pilot senior, Josh Kiefer advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Chris Swank (Spring Arbor) by the score of 6-1, 6-1 before bowing out against the number two seed in the bracket. At number four singles, Nathan Baker was successful in making it to the semi-finals as well by virtue of his 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jeff Graf (Marian). Baker then dropped a hard-fought three-set match to the number two seed in the bracket. In doubles play, Bethel’s number two team of Kiefer and Mikael Dodge defeated Graf and Nelson (Marian) 8-4 before losing to the number one seed in the bracket from Taylor in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the Pilots number three pair of Ryan Yoder and Robby Hamman defeated Cable and Hageman (Huntington) 8-4, and then Fairchild and Hostetler (Marian) 8-2 in the semi-finals to get to the championship match where they fell to the top seeds from Indiana Wesleyan in a tie-breaker.
“Our men played well in a number of opening day matches,” stated Bethel’s Director of Tennis, John Natali. “Ryan Yoder played good tennis at number one singles in a losing effort, and Josh Kiefer was able to advance to the semi-finals before being knocked off. Nathan Baker likewise advanced to the semi-finals with an impressive opening round win before falling on Friday. In doubles play, Kiefer and Dodge were very competitive against the top seeds from Taylor in the semi-finals before going down. And our number three tandem of Yoder and Hamman played outstanding tennis in making it all the way to the championship match where they lost a heart-breaker 9-8.”
After play was completed, the MCC All-Conference Team was announced and Bethel senior, Josh Kiefer was recognized as a member of that 2008 MCC All-Conference Team.
