Game Summary

The Bethel College men’s and women’s track teams registered victories on Saturday at the Defiance Invitational in the first outdoor meet of the season. The Pilot men won five events and finished first with 223.5 points. Meanwhile, the Bethel women won 8 events and placed first with 260 points.

The Bethel men were led by Robby Burns and Jordan Heim, both winners in two events each. Burns finished first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.67, and Heim won the 400m run with a time of 49.32. Burns and Heim joined teammates Nate Phillips and Calen Boyd on the Pilot 4x400m relay team which placed first with a time of 3:23.51. Other Bethel event winners were Calon Naragon in the 10K with a time of 32:50.14, and Jared Mead in the 3K steeplechase with a time of 10:20.30.

Bethel performers who finished second in their respective events included Phillips in the 400m run with a time of 50.01, Vincent Reel in the 800m run with a time of 1:58.91, Burns in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.49, JJ Jackson in the hammer with a throw of 152’7”, Phil Yike in the discus with a toss of 127’6”, Jeff Hardman in the javelin with a distance of 172’6”, and Yike again in the shot put with a toss of 42’6”. In addition, the Bethel 4x100m relay team of JW Maierle, Trent Chupp, Phillips and Mikal Ryals placed second with a time of 42.95, and the Pilot 4x800m relay squad of Scott Robinson, Ryan Weybright, Mead, and Naragon also finished second with a time of 8:31.84.

The Lady Pilots were led by Nichole Arnold and Lauren Pridgen, both double winners at the meet. Arnold placed first in the discus with a throw of 131’9”, and first in the shot put with a toss of 41’4.25”, which was an NAIA qualifying mark. Pridgen won the 400m run with a time of 1:00.40, and joined teammates Heather Rathbun, Beenne Capre, and Jessie Spearman on the 4x400m relay team which placed first with a time of 4:06.31. Other Bethel event winners included Danielle Lewis in the 10K with a time of 41:45.76, and Leah Schwartz in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.42. In addition, the Lady Pilot 4x100m relay team of Samantha Etter, Calyn Zahl, Kati Beutler, and Bethany Aldrich placed first with a time of 50.87, and the 4x800m relay squad of Mozy Thiel, Brianna Adkins, Marcia Poliquin, and Katie Heisey finished first with a time of 11:29.98.

Finishing second in their events were Charity Brown in the 10K with a time of 46:24.65, Irene Kangai in the 1500m run with a time of 5:10.22, Spearman in the 400m run with a time of 1:01.48, Haleigh Sanders in the 800m run with a time of 2:30.55, Pridgen in the 200m dash with a time of 27.11, Arnold in the hammer with a throw of 131’5”, Etter in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.79, and Etter again in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:09.45.

The Bethel track teams will return to action on Saturday, March 28 when they will take part in the Goshen College Invitational.
