Lady Pilots Earn NCCAA Honors, Prepare For NAIA Nationals

The NCCAA North Central Region women’s basketball post season awards were announced today and once again, the Lady Pilots of Bethel College were well represented.

Amber Peters, a 5’6” senior from Niles, MI, playing in her only year at BC, was named North Central Region Player of the Year.  Peters, who was also named MCC Player of the Year, is averaging 9 points per game and nearly 12 rebounds per game.  She also leads the team in assists and minutes played and has been a crucial part of the Lady Pilots "reloading" season in which they won their second straight MCC title.  Mandy Yoder, a sophomore guard from Nappanee, IN was also named the North Central Region First Team.  Yoder leads the Lady Pilots in scoring at 16.6 points per game and leads the team in steals. Fellow sophomore Heather Seyfred (Galien, MI) was named to the honorable mention team as she has averaged 14.6 points per game and has knocked down an amazing 90 three pointers.  Bethel Coach Jody Martinez was again named North Central Region Coach of the Year.  Martinez has won the honor nine times in his 11 years at Bethel.

"These individual honors are great for Amber, Mandy and Heather, but they are truly a reflection of this entire team and what they as a group have accomplished this season," said Martinez.  "These three have been such a vital part of an amazing season and we look forward to the challenge that still lays ahead of us in the NAIA National Tournament," added Martinez.

After winning the Mid Central Conference regular season championship, the Lady Pilots (22-8) have earned an at-large bid into the NAIA Division II Women’s National Championship Tournament, to be held in Sioux City, Iowa, beginning Wednesday, March 12, 2009.  Bethel (ranked No. 16 in the latest NAIA national poll) will face Cedarville University in the opening round of the tournament. Game time for Wednesday’s first round game is 4:30 pm EST.
