Wawasee's Ashlee Ort Signs To Play Basketball At Bethel

Ashlee Ort, a 3-sport athlete from Wawasee High School, has committed to continue her basketball and academic careers for the 2009-2010 season at Bethel College (NAIA) in Mishawaka, IN. This past season, Bethel College finished in the ‘Sweet 16’ at the NAIA Division II National Tournament losing to eventual national champion, Morningside College. Bethel College went back to back in winning the Mid-Central Conference with a record of 13-3 and an overall record of 23-9.
Ashlee was a 3-sport letter-winner during her senior year playing, basketball, soccer, and track and field. She played basketball under Coach Kem Zolman and was a 3-year letter-winner. She won the Defensive Award her senior year; won the Newcomer Award her junior year; made it to the State Finals during her sophomore year; and made it to the Final Four her junior year.
Besides basketball, Ashlee was a 3-year letter-winner in soccer, 1-year letter winner in softball and a 1-year letter-winner in track and field. She made the All-Northern Lakes Conference 1st team in soccer. She was Rookie of the Year during her sophomore year in soccer; Outstanding Defensive Player in soccer during her senior year. Wawasee Soccer made it to the Semi-state twice during her sophomore and junior years. In track, Ashlee was named to the All-Northern Lakes Conference – HM team as she was a sectional runner-up in the 800 meters during her senior year. She was also named MVP in track/field her senior year.
“Ashlee is a great athlete,” states Head Coach Jody Martinez (Bethel College). “She will be playing two sports here at Bethel: soccer first and then basketball. So, once we get here into the program after soccer season, it will be a matter of time for Ashlee to learn the system her freshmen year and push the players for some playing time. We are blessed to have Ashlee join the Lady Pilots family at Bethel College for the 2009 season.”
“Bethel was an easy choice for me once I visited the very first time,” states Ashlee Ort. “The mix of athletics and academics seems like a great opportunity for me. I never dreamed I would get to play two sports at a competitive level in college but now its reality. I am planning on growing as a person while being at Bethel with the Christian atmosphere.”
Wawasee Head Coach Kem Zolman says this about Ashlee Ort: “We are excited for the opportunity that Ashlee has to further her college education and experience college athletics. She has and will continue to have a work ethic in the class room that will carry over to the college class room. She has grown mentally in such a way that she understands the importance of priorities. She uses her faith that drives her work ethic along with a God given competitive drive in both the educational and athletic arena. Ashlee’s better days are ahead of her athletically because of that mental growth. Her God given athletic abilities will continue to progress under Coach Martinez’s teaching.”
