Blackthorn Big Time Challenge

Game Summary

The NAIA No. 3 Bethel College women’s golf team won the Blackthorn Big Time Challenge in dominant fashion with a final round 298 on Saturday afternoon.

Bethel’s 298 tied the school record as the Pilots cruised to the 67 stroke first place finish. The two day total of 602 (304, 298) smashes the previous two day school record of 611.

The Pilots, who had the top six finishers in the event, were led by freshmen Jessica Layman who followed up yesterday’s 70 with a final round 75 to win the event by one stroke. Layman bested Pilots senior Shanna Page who was very consistent shooting 73 on both days.

Brooke Gilbert and Katie Powell tied for third in the tournament with a two day total of 157 while Kara Ballinger’s 160 was good enough for a fifth place finish.
Playing as an individual, Beth Slusher shot a 161 for a sixth place finish. Also playing as individuals, Jennifer Hudock shot 163 and Melanie Day shot 168 for 12th and 13th place finishes respectively.

“What a great way for our seniors to end their career at Blackthorn,” said Head Coach Danny Randolph. “They got us so focused in and wanted to go out with a bang. Now we have two more big ones to get. I was also proud of our underclassmen. Jessica did a great job of responding after her first round 70 and for her to collect her first medalist honor is outstanding. Beth played well over the two days and I was proud of her 77. The best of the spring, Melanie finally got the monkey off her back of breaking 80 and I expect her to do it a lot more.”

The Pilots return to action for the Independent Championship on Monday, April 27th in Nashville, Tenn.
