Women's Tennis Evens MCC Record With Win Over Goshen
Game Summary
The Bethel College men’s and women’s tennis teams hosted Goshen College on Saturday afternoon in an MCC contest played at Baker Park in Mishawaka. The men dropped a hard—fought 5—4 decision while the Lady Pilots posted a 7—2 victory over the Maple Leafs. The Bethel men are now 1—4 for the season (0—3 MCC), and the Bethel women improve their season mark to 4—2 (2—2 MCC).
The men’s match began with singles where the teams split six matches. Winning for the Pilots were Alex Tsikouris at number three, Robby Hamman at number four, and Rosten Hamman at number six. Action then shifted to doubles where Goshen prevailed at number one, and the Bethel duo of Nathan Baker and Robby Hamman won at number two to even the match at 4—4. The deciding contest was played at number three doubles where the Pilots dropped a tough 9—7 match to the Maple Leafs to end the match.
“Coach Gingerich and I were naturally disappointed in the outcome today,” stated Bethel Coach John Natali. “However we were not discouraged with the effort. Everyone played hard and we just came up short in a really close match that could have gone either way.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Pilots began play with doubles where Bethel took two of three matches. At number one, Whitney Neuenschwander and Sarah Cressman played an excellent match winning by the score of 8—4. And at number two, Carrie Edison and Brittney Anglin won their match by the score of 8—5 giving Bethel a 2—1 advantage heading into singles play. The Lady Pilots dominated singles action by taking five of six matches to claim victory. Bethel’s Carrie Edison won at the number one position while Brittney Anglin came out on top at number two. Sarah Cressman, Julia Horn, and Jill Focht won their matches at numbers four, five, and six respectively.
“It was great having Carrie Edison, Julia Horn, and Kristine Hosinski back in the line—up today,” stated Bethel coach, John Natali. “And even though they weren’t 100% healthy yet, they provided us with some good tennis today. Carrie, along with Brittney Anglin played very well as both won in singles and doubles. Sarah Cressman likewise was a double winner for us today, winning at number four singles and then teaming up with her doubles partner, Whitney Neuenschwander at number one doubles. Julia Horn won a tough three—set match at number five singles, and Jill Focht continued to play well for us at number six.”
The Bethel men and women will return to the courts on Tuesday, September 22nd when they will be on the road to meet Spring Arbor University. Women’s play will begin at 2:30pm and the men will get under way at 4:00pm.
