Tennis Completes Annual Alumni Match

The Bethel College men’s and women’s 2009-10 tennis season kicked-off on Saturday afternoon with the Pilots welcoming back ten former tennis standouts for the annual Alumni Match. The format was informal as this was an opportunity for players from the past to get together once again and renew good friendships. It also gave them a chance to meet the current members of the Bethel tennis program.

Returning to the Bethel courts for the alumni men were Jamal Henry, Dario Garza, Zach Grubbs, Jared Shriner, Josh Grubbs, Ryan Yoder, John Dendiu and Rodney Grubbs. This group enjoyed an afternoon competing against current Bethel players Robby Hamman, Alex Tsikouris, Nathan Baker, and Stephen Ward to name just a few.

On the women’s side, former Bethel players Missy Vermillion and Jade Jones (Walus), returned to compete with the present-day Lady Pilots led by Julia Horn, Carrie Edison, Brittney Anglin, and Kristine Hosinski to name just a few. Overall, it was an afternoon of great fellowship, cool weather, and great tennis action.

“This is always a fun event for us and the returning alums”, stated Bethel coach John Natali. “And it gives Coach Gingerich and me an opportunity to assess where our current team stands. And we are very encouraged with how our men’s and women’s doubles teams have played and continue to improve so far this season.”

The Pilots will be back in action on Wednesday, September 2nd when they will travel to Fort Wayne to begin the regular 2009-10 season with a match with Indiana Tech. Both the men’s and women’s matches are slated to begin at 4:00pm.
